During the war In 1864, Denmark lost the southern part of the country to Germany, and it was therefore common to hear German spoken. Also in Sønderborg, where Paul Rockler had his workshop. After referendums, the area was reunited with Denmark again in 1920. And therefore the first ad with the bike is written in German, and the second written in Danish.
In the 17th-1800s, the entire area by Slotsgade was characterized by craftsmen, also No. 4, where blacksmith Paul Rochlers had his workshop. The tasks in the workshop were blacksmithing, water and sanitation and around 1900 also the sale and repair of bicycles. From around the year 1900, bicycles began to be mass-produced and therefore ordinary people began to be able to buy bicycles. The popularity grew explosively in Denmark, especially among the working class who were otherwise used to walking. Now they could get far around on a bike.
The advertisement from the year 1900 advertises in German that there is a guarantee on bicycles, that they will be repaired and that used bicycles will also be bought and sold.
The second advertisement from 1930 advertises that blacksmithing and plumbing work is being done.
