De plek
Wie nu over de Huizingalaan in Utrecht Noordoost loopt valt het misschien niet op; de betonblokken zijn wat verweerd en hoge bomen onttrekken het ooit opvallende torentje deels aan het oog. Maar in 1964 trok het woonhuis annex architectenbureau van Piet Dingemans veel aandacht. Dat gold niet alleen voor de gedurfde buitenkant maar ook voor het flexibele interieur. Het blad De vrouw en haar huis bestempelde het als Huis voor de Toekomst.

Piet Dingemans liet zien dat het anders kon. Hij bouwde zijn huis annex kantoor van b2-betonblokken, een product van Bredero dat 10 jaar later ook voor Muziekcentrum Vredenburg werd gebruikt. Dingemans gebruikte de blokken creatief: door ze bij het torenkamertje en de balustrade van het dakterras op hun kant te leggen ontstond een ajour-effect (patroon van openingen). Het Utrechts Nieuwsblad noemde het pand in 1964 een spel van fantasie en functionaliteit, een originele schepping die verblijdend afweek van “de sleur van zoveel naargeestige, zgn. ‘moderne’ bouw-uniformiteit”.

De persoon
Ir. P.H. Dingemans (1910-1970) ontwierp in de jaren zestig kerken, scholen en woonhuizen in Utrecht. Zijn bekendste gebouw staat echter in Maastricht: het Conservatorium, dat onlangs is voorgedragen als rijksmonument uit de Wederopbouw. Z’n Utrechtse woon-werkhuis wordt wel Dingemanshuis genoemd, maar we kunnen gerust spreken van de Dingemansbuurt. De architect ontwierp namelijk naast — en vanuit — zijn eigen pand de woonhuizen van de buren aan de Huizingalaan, en daartegenover de Schildersschool (Nimeto) en het Atheneum De Munnik. Het atheneum is inmiddels gesloopt en Nimeto grondig verbouwd.

The place
Anyone who is now walking along the Huizingalaan in Utrecht Northeast may not notice it; the concrete blocks are somewhat weathered and tall trees partially hide the once striking tower from view. But in 1964, Piet Dingemans' house and architectural firm drew a lot of attention. This not only applied to the bold exterior but also to the flexible interior. The magazine The woman and her house labeled it House for the Future.

Piet Dingemans showed that things could be done differently. He built his house and office from b2 concrete blocks, a Bredero product that was also used 10 years later for the Vredenburg Music Center. Dingemans used the blocks creatively: placing them on their side near the tower room and the balustrade of the roof terrace created an openwork effect (pattern of openings). In 1964, the Utrechts Nieuwsblad called the building a play of fantasy and functionality, an original creation that happily deviated from "the grind of so much gloomy, so-called" modern "building uniformity.

The person
Ir. P.H. Dingemans (1910-1970) designed churches, schools and houses in Utrecht in the 1960s. His most famous building, however, is in Maastricht: the Conservatory, which has recently been nominated as a national monument from the Reconstruction. His Utrecht home-work house is sometimes called Dingemanshuis, but we can safely speak of the Dingemansbuurt. The architect designed next to - and from - his own building the houses of the neighbors on the Huizingalaan, and opposite the painting school (Nimeto) and the Atheneum De Munnik. The atheneum has since been demolished and Nimeto has been thoroughly renovated.
