"A unique feature of the former cantonal court is the presence of the prison cells completed in 1802. These are not only special because of the still completely original interior, but also because of the inscriptions and murals painted by the prisoners.
The Deventer subdistrict court is also known as the Bouwershuis. Research in archives provided insight into the use of the premises in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The distinguished Bouwer family, almost every generation of which produced aldermen or mayors, turned out to be the occupants of the building at that time. In 1726 Arnold Bouwer commissioned the fine rococo stucco ceilings that still adorn some of the rooms on the first floor today. The theme of justice has been used more than once in the program, which is especially unusual since the building was purchased in 1802 to serve as a district court.
The old cell complex in the basement is still fully intact and original, and at the front of the building hardstone blocks are still visible in the paving of the Brink, which served as the foundation for the former scaffold.
In the nineteenth century the building was renovated more than once. This mainly meant an austerity of the interior. In 1802, the seventeenth-century windows in the facade were replaced. During the restoration of the exterior in 1943, oddly enough, sash windows were installed instead of cross windows that the façade had had.
The building has not been used as a district court until 2014."
