Uffington Castle is one of a series of hillforts sitting on the Ridgeway a ancient track running between Avebury to the South West and Ivinghoe Beacon to the North East. The castle itself dates to the early Iron age, excavations suggesting it was probably constructed around 7th to 8th Century BC. As with most hill fort it was constructed in a dominant position high on the downs above the Oxfordshire lowlands. The fort remains a prominent feature in the landscape with two banks and ditches enclosing an area of just over three hectares.

A visit can be made from the nearby free car park being just a short but steep walk away. Management by English Heritage means access is open to all for free, to walk within the enclosure and around the banks. The nearby White horse which dates to a similar period is also well worth a look.
