This is an old boundary marker. Marking the boundary where one local authority takes over responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the roads and railways in the local area.
It is a black metal headstone shaped boundary marker. It says "H&LA 1878". This stands for Highways and Locomotive act 1878.
It is embedded in to the ground in front of the Seaton Leng funeral parlour on Bondage in Darlington in the North east of England.
