In de Zeepeduinen en bij Slot Haamstede liggen zo’n 40 bunkers uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Op het hoge duin ligt de commandopost: de Walvisbunker.

De Walvisbunker en bijbehorende anderen waren onderdeel van de Atlantikwall, de Duitse kustverdedigingslinie van ruim 2500 km lang. De Atlantikwall liet ook op Schouwen sporen na. Om de kust en het vliegveld Haamstede te verdedigen tegen een geallieerde invasie bouwden de Duitsers hier het Stützpunkgruppe Schouwen. Een uitgebreid complex van tientallen bunkers welke verrees in de duinen van Schouwen en in het Slotbos van kasteel Haamstede. Bijna alle bunkers zijn van de standaardmodellen die in de hele Atlantikwall voorkomen. Ook zijn er onder anderen nog veel manschappenonderkomens en een hospitaalbunker te vinden.

The Whale Bunker and associated others were part of the Atlantic Wall, the German coastal defense line of more than 2500 km long. The Atlantic Wall also left traces on Schouwen. To defend the coast and Haamstede airfield against an Allied invasion, the Germans built the Stützpunkgruppe Schouwen here. An extensive complex of dozens of bunkers which arose in the dunes of Schouwen and in the Slotbos of Haamstede Castle. Almost all bunkers are of the standard models that occur throughout the Atlantic Wall. There are also many crew shelters and a hospital bunker.
