Source: (visit link)

The monument to the Danish Spanish-volunteers who fell in the Spanish Civil War stands in Churchill Park on the Esplanade. The monument is made of granite by the artist Per Ulrich and erected on November 1, 1986.

About 550 Danes participated as part of the international brigade in the Spanish Civil War, even though the Danish government had banned participation. Imprisonment was therefore expected for the returned Danes. Out of the 550 Danes, about 200 were killed in the civil war, including the author Gustaf Munch-Petersen.

The International Brigades is the common name for the Republican military units, which consisted of volunteers from other countries who fought in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). They fought against the Spanish nationalists (fascists), led by Franco, who were supported by troops from Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. The Danish participants in the brigades are called Spanish volunteers. It is estimated that approx. 32,000 people from reportedly 53 countries fought in the International Brigades.
