A cable-stayed bridge or cable or cable bridge is a type of bridge with one or more pillars where a piece of bridge deck is suspended from each pillar by means of cables (the pullers or cables).
This type of bridge is often used for medium to large spans: 100 to 500 m, although spans of 1100 m have already been reached.
This type of bridge is characterized by a driving deck (road or railway) that is suspended from thick cables (the cables). There is pulling force in the cables. The cables are attached directly to the pylons or are routed through the pylons to be anchored back into the bridge deck in the next span. The pylons then transfer the weight of the bridge to the foundation; there is a compressive force in the pylons.
Cable-stayed bridges are generally used for somewhat larger spans.
The Martinus Nijhoff Bridge has a particularly wide bridge deck for a cable-stayed bridge. Although wider cable-stayed bridges exist in the world, these have split bridge decks, often with a central pylon or three pylons with narrower decks per direction. The bridge deck of the Martinus Nijhoff Bridge is 40 meters wide. For example, the Port Mann Bridge near Vancouver is a cable-stayed bridge 65 meters wide, but these are in fact two decks with the widest being 30 meters wide. This also applies, for example, to the eastern span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston is also wider in totality, but actually also consists of two separate decks that are built next to each other.
Een tuibrug of (tui)kabelbrug is een type brug met één of meerdere pijlers waarbij aan elke pijler een stuk brugdek door middel van kabels (de trekkers of tuikabels) opgehangen is.
Dit soort brug wordt vaak toegepast bij middelgrote tot grote overspanningen: 100 tot 500 m, alhoewel overspanningen van 1100 m al bereikt zijn.

Het brugdek van de Martinus Nijhoffbrug is 40 meter breed. Bijvoorbeeld de Port Mann Bridge bij Vancouver is een tuibrug van 65 meter breed, maar dit zijn in feite twee dekken waarvan de breedste 30 meter breed is. Dit geldt bijvoorbeeld ook voor de oostelijke overspanning van de San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. De Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge in Boston is in totaliteit ook breder maar bestaat feitelijk ook uit twee aparte dekken die naast elkaar zijn gebouwd.
