The entrance to the cemetery is stately, beautiful and at the same time modest. Through this entrance you enter the oldest part of the cemetery. The narrow paths along the fields are a striking element of the cemetery.
This cemetery contains about 140 graves including many family graves.
Only accessible from sunrise to sunset.

" The General Cemetery was built in several phases from 1829 onwards. The terrain is accessible via an image-defining entrance building with service house in a Business expressionist design (circa 1930). At the general cemetery is Also a resistance monument of the Municipality of Meppel (J.J. Boot, 1947) placed. At this natural stone memorial are twenty gravestones of people from Meppel who were buried in the resistance played a role.

The oldest part of the cemetery is located to the left and right of the entrance.
On the left are the 'church graves'. These are the graves that were made available to rightholders of cemeteries in the church, when it was no longer allowed to be buried there. No graves have been transferred from the church. To the right of the entrance lies the part with the first 'own graves'. Adjacent to this is a seemingly empty field, where Meppelers were buried without their own graves. The graves here were buried in the past marked with poles. This is popularly called the 'Spanish Influenza Field', although more people were buried than the victims of the epidemic of 1918. Recently this field has been cleared and refurbished. "
