American Way, a broad avenue in National Harbor, is home to many statues of historic figures - Washington, Lincoln, FDR, and many others. Others are equally historic but fictitious figures, and among these is Rosie the Riveter, representing the women who worked in the aircraft factories during World War II. The term "Rosie the Riveter" was first used in 1942 in a song of the same name written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb; the song was popular and was recorded by many artists during WWII. Even today Rosie is a symbol of feminism and economic equality. This colorful statue depicts Rosie in a blue and white factory uniform and flexing a muscular arm.
