Dit kleine fort aan het inundatiewater van de Bakkerskil werd gebouwd tussen 1877 en 1879. Het kwam in de plaats van een zuidelijk bij de Papsluis gelegen batterij uit 1847. Het verdedigingswerk ligt op de Kildijk ten noorden van Nieuwendijk en ten zuidoosten van Werkendam. Het fort moest de dijk afsluiten en de Papsluis beveiligen. Deze inundatiewaaiersluis was de meest zuidelijk gelegen hoofdinlaatsluis voor de inundatie van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Als onderdeel van deze belangrijke verdedigingslinie (NHW) staat Bakkerskil op de nominatie voor de ‘Werelderfgoedlijst’ van de UNESCO. De installatie beschikt over een bomvrij gebouw en verkeert in algehele goede staat.

Tijdens de Eerste- en Tweede Wereldoorlog bood het fort onderdak aan honderden soldaten, maar er werd niet gevochten. Sinds 1951 is het fort niet meer in gebruik voor militaire doeleinden.

Het fort is aan de binnenzijde ingrijpend verbouwd en herbergt tegenwoordig een bed & breakfast. U kunt nu dus luxueus overnachten op een plek waar ooit soldaten vernikkelden in de kou.

This small fort on the inundation water of the Bakkerskil was built between 1877 and 1879. It replaced a battery from 1847 located south of the Papsluis. The defensive work is located on the Kildijk north of Nieuwendijk and southeast of Werkendam. The fort had to close off the dyke and secure the Papsluis. This inundation fan lock was the most southerly main inlet lock for the inundation of the New Dutch Waterline. As part of this important line of defense (NHW), Bakkerskil has been nominated for the UNESCO "World Heritage List". The installation has a bomb-proof building and is in overall good condition.

The fort has been radically renovated on the inside and now houses a bed & breakfast. You can now spend the night in a luxurious place where once soldiers were freezing to death in the cold.
