At the Shepherds 'Field at the village of Beit Sahur, (Hebrew for "village of the shepherds"), an angel, according to Christian tradition, appeared to local shepherds to convey the message of Jesus' birth.
At the site, there are several caves that have been used as shrines over time, and archaeological excavations have shown that the oldest is from around 300 years. In the caves there are many religious symbols and you can see that they are still used for prayer.
In 1954, the Italian architect Barluzz built a Roman Catholic church on the site, the Church at the Shepherds 'Field or as it is also called the Chapel at the Shepherds' Field.
The fountain is probably built at the same time as the church. It is made of sandstone. A shepherd is the center and he is surrounded by sheep. Sheep heads are also part of the decoration. On the fountain there are also birds and palm leaves.
