Howling Hops Brewery began in 2011 in the cellar of the Cock Tavern, on Mare Street, Hackney. Immediate high demand meant that the brewery was very soon too small, yet it continued in these cramped circumstances, with a ceiling height of only 5 foot 10 inches, until relocating to the current, much more spacious address in 2015. A 15 brewers’ barrel kit was installed and remains in use today.
As the brewery’s name suggests, Howling Hops brew beers which are boldly hopped and flavoursome. They are available in keg, cask and can and are not exclusive to the brewpub.
Adjacent to the brewery is a large tap room known as the Tank Bar, where ten large, vertical tanks are used to store and dispense beer fresh from the brewery. This bar is spacious, mostly using trestle tables for customers. There is also a large, covered, outdoor seating area. This is a beer bar, with just a limited range of other drinks available. All beers are unpasturised and unfiltered and they are suitable for vegans. Freshly prepared food is also available from the on-site kitchen; at the time of writing, this features a Colombian menu.
