[EN] "When friendships are made", the two riders of the sculpture meet in front of the concert hall as a symbol of friendship between Turku and Gothenburg. Gothenburg, which had been the "godfathercity" of Turku since the beginning of the 1940s, became the twin city of Turku in 1946.

After the war, the city of Turku ordered a sculpture from Wäinö Aaltonen (1894–1966) to be donated to Gothenburg in gratitude for cooperation and support during the war years. The sculpture was unveiled in Gothenburg in 1955. A duplicate of the sculpture was donated to the City of Turku by Turku Verkatehdas Oy and Leo Wainstein, Commercial Counselor. The idea was that residents in two distant cities would see the same work of art and remember the bond of friendship between the cities. The sculpture was unveiled on May 21, 1955.

Sitting on a horseback has typically been interpreted as a sign of power, especially in the pictorial language of monumental sculptures of great men. In Aaltonen's work, however, the horses standing on their necks and the male and female figures looking at each other refer above all to intimacy. The model for the young woman in the work was Anja, Wäinö Aaltonen's daughter.

Veistos paljastettiin 21.5.1955.

Ratsailla istuminen on tyypillisesti tulkittu vallan merkiksi etenkin suurmiesten muistomerkkiveistosten kuvakielessä. Aaltosen teoksessa kaulakkain seisovat hevoset ja toisiaan katsovat mies- ja naisfiguurit viittaavat kuitenkin ennen kaikkea läheisyyteen. Teoksessa esiintyvän nuoren naisen mallina toimi Wäinö Aaltosen tytär Anja.
