This staircase with 125 steps connects Praça D. Dinis, in Alta de Coimbra, considered as the nascent limit of the university city, to the place where Oliveira Matos, Venâncio Rodrigues and Castro Matoso streets are located. By the way, I recommend the excellent pastry, restaurant and bakery at the bottom of the stairs. It is simply called the University.
The Monumental Stairs were a focal point during the 1969 Academic Crisis, witnessing an infamous police charge on the students.
