Between 1901 and 1904 more than 2500 mine shafts were dug throughout the Wichita Mountains. In 1904, Cripple Creek miners sold a part interest in their Tunnel Site Mine to the Pennington brothers for the then princely sum of $5000. The site became known as the Pennington Mine. The horizontal tunnel, driven into the solid granite of the mountains on the east bank of West Cache Creek, eventually achieved a length of 110 feet. The miners eventually struck a pocket of gold and platinum, but little was actually extracted.
To reach the mine requires a strenuous hike over broken terrain dominated by rocks and boulders; you will have to cross the creek several times. The mine is accessible but is closed off by iron bars about thirty feet from the entrance. For those interested in such, the site is also the subject of a virtual geocache.
