Ir. Cornelis Lely was the founder of the Zuiderzeewerken.
He saw the dangers of dike breaches and flooding in the former Zuiderzee and came up with a plan to prevent this in the future.
The Zuiderzee with an area of 5900 km2 was completely closed off by the Afsluitdijk of the Waddenzee and thus became a lake.
The new name became IJsselmeer.
Polders were created in the lake. A total of 1,412 km2 of good agricultural land became available as a result.
Unfortunately, Lely was unable to see the results of his plans. He died before the Afsluitdijk was finished.
The 3 meter high bronze statue was made in 1984 by Piet Esser.
The base is made of bluestone and at the bottom are basalt blocks.
It is located in the capital of the province of Flevoland named after him, Lelystad.
