This Dawn Redwood rises above its neighbors on oblong shaped island part of the U.S. Capital Grounds. There are roughly 900 trees including two Dawn Redwoods and other Redwoods. This tree was planted in memory of Christa McAuliffe who was a teacher and astronaut, she was one of the seven members that died in the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.
