Sgt. Patrick Gass, 1771 - 1870, is buried in Wellsburg, West Virginia. The bust was sculpted by Agnes Vincent Talbot of Boise, Idaho. The Lewis and Clark expedition camped here on 22 August 1804, and were obliged to conduct an election to replace Sgt. Floyd, who had died a couple days earlier near Sioux City, IA. As citizen of Virginia and chief carpenter for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Sgt. Gass published the first account of the Expedition in 1807.
