De gemeente Benschop was tot 1 januari 1989 een zelfstandige gemeente. Vanaf die datum maakte Benschop samen met de gemeente Polsbroek, waarvan de zelfstandigheid in 1989 eveneens afliep, deel uit van de gemeente Lopik. Daarmee kwam er ook een einde aan de bijna vijftigjarige functie van het gemeentehuis van Benschop en Polsbroek aan het Dorp 182 in Benschop. Sinds 1922 werden de raadsvergaderingen van Benschop gedaan in een woning op de huidige locatie van het voormalige gemeentehuis aan het Dorp. In 1939 werd het gemeentehuis gebouwd. In de topgevel is het gemeentewapen van Benschop in een gevelsteen uitgehakt. Dit wapen was een geschenk van de inwoners van Benschop, die daarvoor via collectes en intekening het geld bijeen hadden gebracht.

The municipality of Benschop was an independent municipality until 1 January 1989. From that date, Benschop, together with the municipality of Polsbroek, whose independence also ended in 1989, was part of the municipality of Lopik. This also brought an end to the almost fifty-year function of the town hall of Benschop and Polsbroek at the Dorp 182 in Benschop. Since 1922, Benschop's council meetings have been held in a house at the current location of the former town hall on the Dorp. The town hall was built in 1939. In the top facade, Benschop's municipal coat of arms is carved into a facing brick. This weapon was a gift from the residents of Benschop, who had raised the money through collections and subscription.
