At this 'Elk Sign' campsite on 22 August 1804, the first election by United States citizens west of the Mississippi River tested the noble experiment of the United States democracy in the Louisiana Territory.
The site is decorated with a stone wall, five historic plaques describing the corps activities here, and a statue of Sgt. Patrick Gass, elected to replace Sgt. Floyd, who died two days earlier near Sioux City.
On the right is a photo of the National Historic Trail Plaque near the site.

The statue of Sgt. Gass, elected to replace Sgt. Floyd, stands near these plaques.
The western shore and river breaks extending for miles along the Missouri River form the western horizon here.
The park at this site has lots of hiking/biking trails, a scenic pond, and a geocache for the finding.
