[EN] The bronze sculpture The Icy Sea, designed by sculptor Raimo Utriainen (1927–1994), is a monument to winter shipping, erected by the City of Turku in 1961. The work is located along the Aura River near the Port of Turku, where merchant and cargo ships have been operating for hundreds of years. The base of the sculpture is marked with the name of August Uppman, the captain of the sea and founder of the steamship company Bore. The Bore shipping company was a pioneer in winter shipping in Turku.

In Utriainen's work, two steep, angular-faced sailor figures stand on top of an element pointing to the bow of the ship, staring at the sea. One of the characters seems to protect his face with a hand from the whipping wind. The sturdy vertical figures of the bronze sculpture are reminiscent of experienced sailors, who are not intimidated by the watch even in bad weather.

[FIN] Kuvanveistäjä Raimo Utriaisen (1927–1994) suunnittelema pronssiveistos Jäinen meri on Turun kaupungin vuonna 1961 pystyttämä muistomerkki talvimerenkululle. Teos sijaitsee Aurajoen varrella lähellä Turun satamaa, missä kauppa- ja rahtilaivat ovat liikennöineet satoja vuosia. Veistoksen sokkeliin on merkitty merikapteeni, höyrylaivaosakeyhtiö Boren perustajan August Uppmanin nimi. Bore eli Rettig Group Ltd. Bore -laivanvarustamo oli talvimerenkulun uranuurtajia Turussa.

Utriaisen teoksessa kaksi jyhkeää, kasvonpiirteiltään kulmikasta merimiesfiguuria, seisoo laivan keulaan viittaavan elementin päällä tähyten merelle. Toinen hahmoista näyttää suojaavan kädellä kasvojaan piiskaavalta viimalta. Pronssiveistoksen jykevät vertikaaliset hahmot tuovat mieleen kokeneet merenkulkijat, joita huonotkaan sääolot eivät pelota vahtivuorolta pois.
