On November 19, 1805 Capt. William Clark led a small party along this beach. This excursion was their first contact with the Pacific Ocean. One entry from Clark’s journal was “we found a Curious flat fish Shaped like a turtle, with fins on each side, and a tale notched . . . has a white belly on one side & lies flat to the Ground. . .” This life-sized bronze statue of William Clark depicts this event.
