"Located on the edge of a wooded park, this 19th century bourgeois residence was bequeathed to the city of Arlon by Charles Gaspar (1871 1950), pictorialist photographer, collector, patron and benefactor of the city. If his will stipulates that the entire house as well as all the collections go to the city, it has one condition: making its house a museum.
From then on, when he died in 1950, it was an immense collection comprising photographs, paintings, engravings, sculptures, furniture, old books ... that Charles bequeathed to his hometown. Added to this are the works (bronzes and plasters) of Jean Gaspar (1861-1931), his brother, who was a sculptor to him. This prestigious ensemble today constitutes the Gaspar legacy, the core of the museum's permanent collection.
To this can be added other art collections, gleaned over the years, including the exceptional Fisenne Altarpiece, a jewel of religious art from the Antwerp workshops of the 16th century and the centerpiece of the collection.
Everything is nestled in this magnificent residence, completely restored in 2003, and dedicated, since its opening in 2004, to the art and history of Arlon and its region.
The museum lives above all at the rate of temporary exhibitions where the art and history of the Greater Region are presented to the public in a fun way. A privileged partner of the Academy of Fine Arts of the City of Arlon, the museum offers an ephemeral art exhibition every June in Gaspar Park. This is an opportunity for the students of the academy to present the fruit of their artistic research to walkers and visitors of this urban park.
The museum, one of the actors of the Art & Mus Network (MSW), is a “museum for children admitted” and offers various activities for young visitors: guide for young visitors, birthday parties at the museum, family workshops ...
In addition to the prestigious legacy of Charles Gaspar which presents artists like James Ensor, Suzanne Valadon, Jef Lambeaux, Georges Lemmen, Nestor Outer, Camille Barthélemy, Marie Howet, Camille Lambert (nl), as well as sculptures, engravings, photogravures and old canvases , the museum has collections of religious art, the centerpiece of which is the Fisenne Altarpiece (ca 1510). This piece, from the Antwerp workshops of the 16th century, is beautifully preserved and can be seen by visitors in the museum's "religious room". "

"Situé en bordure d'un parc arboré, cette demeure bourgeoise du XIXe siècle fut léguée à la ville d'Arlon par Charles Gaspar (1871-1950), photographe pictorialiste, collectionneur, mécène et bienfaiteur de la ville. Si son testament stipule que l'entièreté de la maison ainsi que toutes les collections reviennent à la ville, il comporte une condition : faire de sa maison un musée.
Dès lors, à sa mort en 1950, c'est une immense collection comportant des photographies, des peintures, des gravures, des sculptures, du mobilier, des livres anciens... que Charles lègue à sa ville natale. À cela s'ajoutent les œuvres (bronzes et plâtres) de Jean Gaspar (1861-1931), son frère, qui lui était sculpteur. Cet ensemble prestigieux constitue aujourd'hui le legs Gaspar, noyau de la collection permanente du musée.
À cela s'ajoutent d'autres collections d'art, glanées au fil des ans, parmi lesquelles l'exceptionnel Retable de Fisenne, joyau de l'art religieux issu des ateliers anversois du XVIe siècle et pièce maîtresse de la collection.
Le tout est niché dans cette magnifique demeure, entièrement restaurée en 2003, et consacrée, depuis son ouverture en 2004, à l'art et à l'histoire d'Arlon et de sa région.
Le musée vit surtout au rythme d'expositions temporaires où l'art et l'histoire de la Grande Région sont présentés aux publics de manière ludique. Partenaire privilégié de l'Académie des Beaux-arts de la Ville d'Arlon, le musée propose durant chaque mois de juin une exposition d'art éphémère dans le parc Gaspar. C'est l'occasion pour les élèves de l'académie de présenter le fruit de leurs recherches artistiques aux promeneurs et visiteurs de ce parc urbain.
Le musée, un des acteurs du Réseau Art & Mus (MSW), est un « musée enfants admis » et propose différentes activités aux jeunes visiteurs : guide du jeune visiteur, anniversaire au musée, ateliers en famille...
Outre le prestigieux legs de Charles Gaspar qui présente des artistes comme James Ensor, Suzanne Valadon, Jef Lambeaux, Georges Lemmen, Nestor Outer, Camille Barthélemy, Marie Howet, Camille Lambert (nl), ainsi que des sculptures, gravures, photogravures et toiles anciennes, le musée possède des collections d’art religieux dont la pièce maîtresse n’est autre que le Retable de Fisenne (ca 1510). Cette pièce, issue des ateliers anversois du XVIe siècle, est magnifiquement conservée et s’offre aux yeux des visiteurs dans la « salle religieuse » du musée. "
