In Delden, in the heart of Twente, salt was first found in the Dutch soil in 1886 at a depth of 566 meters. The existing drinking water was poor at the time, so it was decided to tap fresh sources. To everyone's surprise, brine water and almost pure rock salt came out. However, the discovery of large salt layers near Twickel did not lead to the Dutch salt industry being established near Boekelo until 1918. There are even more of these industrial monuments in the Twense landscape around Hengelo.
