Over de spoorlijn: In 1884 werd mede op initiatief van de regionale textielfabrikanten een lokaalspoorlijn aangelegd tussen Hengelo en Winterswijk. Omdat de snelheid op een lokaalspoorlijn aanmerkelijk lager was dan die op de hoofdspoorlijnen was de aanleg van een lokaalspoorlijn veel goedkoper. De spoorlijn diende voornamelijk voor de aanvoer van de vele kolen die nodig waren voor de Twentse textielindustrie. Tot 1973 werd het traject door de Nederlandse Spoorwegen nog gebruikt voor goederenvervoer. Op 21 februari 1967 werd de stichting Museum Buurt Spoorweg (MBS) opgericht, eerst reed de MBS tussen Haaksbergen en Enschede, en vanaf 1975 tussen Haaksbergen en Boekelo.

Stap het stationsgebouw in Haaksbergen binnen en u ervaart gelijk de sfeer van weleer. Hier koopt u uw treinkaartje en maakt u in de wachtkamer kennis met de reizigers van vroeger. Op en rond het station is veel te zien, zoals bijvoorbeeld de werkplaats en de goederenloods.
De stoomtreinrit voert door het prachtige Twentse landschap langs halte zoutindustrie naar station Boekelo. Hier bevindt zich het museumdepot waar het grootste gedeelte van de locomotieven en wagons staan die nog gerestaureerd moeten worden. Dit geeft u enig idee over hoeveel werk er verzet moet worden voordat een locomotief of wagon weer ingezet kan worden. Voor kinderen zijn er speelgelegenheden ingericht en zijn er diverse grote modelspoorbaan te vinden.
De stations en de treinen zijn geschikt voor minder validen. Parkeren is gratis.

About the railway: In 1884 a local railway was built between Hengelo and Winterswijk, partly on the initiative of the regional textile manufacturers.
