The Velle hydroelectric power station is 53 years old, after being built "over a period of four years, between 1963 and 1967",
It was born for a better use of the river Miño, together with the reservoirs of Belesar and Os Peares - upstream - and Castrelo and Frieira - downstream.

Among the five reservoirs they have an installed power of 930 megawatts - of which a little more than 80 correspond to Velle - and a capacity to reservoir 957 cubic hectometres of water.

Specifically, for its construction "it was necessary to place a couple of cofferdams or islets on both banks of the Miño to proceed with the lifting of the foundations of the dam," as explained by Arturo Valbuena, head of local operations in the northern zone. Some cofferdams that had to withstand, for example, the strong flood of water registered in "March 1963", he pointed out.
