Four scaffold stones in front of the portal of the Old Town Hall in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

The scaffold dates from the 15th century. Since the middle of the 16th century, after the construction of the town hall, many sentences were pronounced in front of the portal and some of them were executed there. There were punishments like burning at the stake, Catherine wheel or even death by the scaffold.
The last execution at this place took place in 1834.
Today the four original scaffold foundation stones remind of the sad past.
