Hotel geopend in monumentale en intensief verbouwde Westerkerk aan Catharijnekade
De voormalige Westerkerk is donderdag officieel geopend voor publiek. De kerk werd een jaar lang intensief verbouwd en is nu een Bunk Hotel. Daarnaast is er ook een café, restaurant en bar in het pand gekomen.
Het gebouw uit 1891 is behalve een hotel en hostel is het ook een restaurant met cultuurpodium. De organisatie zegt dat het gebouw dankzij de toegankelijkheid een verzamelplek voor iedereen moet worden.
Om dit te bereiken zijn er maaltijden van rond de 10 euro in het restaurant en wordt er gegeten aan lange gemeenschappelijke tafels. Ook wordt er kunst tentoongesteld in de kerk en zullen er regelmatig optredens georganiseerd worden.
Het hotel in de Westerkerk is de eerste vestiging van BUNK Hotels, maar naar verwachting wordt er binnenkort een tweede vestiging geopend in de St. Ritakerk in Amsterdam.
De Westerkerk aan de Catharijnekade moest worden verkocht. Steeds meer kerkgemeenschappen in Utrecht hebben het moeilijk: er is namelijk minder geld om de panden te onderhouden en de ontkerkelijking zet verder door. Toch is er de overtuiging dat het erfgoed behouden moet worden voor de stad – bij gemeente, samenleving én ondernemers. Om te voorkomen dat de Westerkerk helemaal zou verdwijnen, is er gezocht naar een nieuwe invulling van de kerk. Hierdoor werd 2015 het kerkgebouw verkocht aan BUNK. In januari 2018 was de laatste kerkdienst in de Westerkerk.
Mede-oprichter Robin Hagedoorn, zag potentie in het monumentale pand. “Het was belangrijk dat de kerk eenzelfde invulling houdt als het van oudsher al had, een ontmoetingsplek”, vertelde Hagedoorn eerder aan DUIC. “De functies van het gebouw zijn lange tijd ontmoeting, bezinning en reflectie geweest. Die heb ik terug laten komen in het plan.”

The former Westerkerk was officially opened to the public on Thursday. The church was extensively renovated for a year and is now a Bunk Hotel. In addition, a café, restaurant and bar have also been added to the building.

The Westerkerk on the Catharijnekade had to be sold. More and more church communities in Utrecht are having a hard time: there is less money to maintain the buildings and the secularization continues. Yet there is the belief that the heritage must be preserved for the city - among the municipality, society and entrepreneurs. To prevent the Westerkerk from disappearing completely, a new interpretation of the church was sought. As a result, the church building was sold to BUNK in 2015. The last church service was in the Westerkerk in January 2018.
Co-founder Robin Hagedoorn saw potential in the monumental building. “It was important that the church keeps the same interpretation as it had traditionally had, a meeting place,” Hagedoorn told DUIC earlier. “The building's functions have long been meeting, contemplation and reflection. I have included them in the plan. ”
