Het grootste deel van het Stadscentrum, bestaat uit het grotendeels overdekte winkelcentrum Cityplaza. Dit winkelcentrum heeft een lokale en regionale functie. De architect van Cityplaza is Jan Hoogstad. Het is gebouwd in de jaren tachtig.
Veel inwoners van Nieuwegein beschouwden het hart als kil en ongezellig. Daarom werd het complete hart herbouwd. De bouw is in 2015 volledig afgerond. Het nieuwe stadscentrum bestaat nu uit circa 155 winkels en daarmee is Cityplaza het grootste winkelcentrum van Nieuwegein en het op een na grootste winkelcentrum van de provincie Utrecht. Ook behoort Cityplaza bij de grootse (deels overdekte) winkelcentra van Nederland. Alleen Winkelcentrum Zuidplein (Rotterdam - de grootste in Nederland), winkelcentrum Hoog Catharijne (Utrecht) en Winkelcentrum Kronenburg (Arnhem) zijn groter. Het gemeentehuis van Nieuwegein bevindt zich helemaal aan het oosten van Cityplaza.

Many residents of Nieuwegein considered the heart to be cold and uncomfortable. Therefore, the entire heart was rebuilt. Construction was completed in 2015. The new city center now consists of approximately 155 shops, making Cityplaza the largest shopping center in Nieuwegein and the second largest shopping center in the province of Utrecht. Cityplaza is also one of the largest (partly covered) shopping centers in the Netherlands. Only Zuidplein Shopping Center (Rotterdam - the largest in the Netherlands), Hoog Catharijne shopping center (Utrecht) and Kronenburg Shopping Center (Arnhem) are larger. The town hall of Nieuwegein is located completely to the east of Cityplaza.
