The Carnegie Library, Dawson City

A grant of $25,000 funding from the well known American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie plus city and territorial assistance enabled construction of the Dawson City Carnegie Library on Queen Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues. The Carnegie Library opened in 1904 with over 5000 books and at the time considered the most elaborate building in Dawson City.

Designed by architect Robert Moncrieff, it was the northernmost Carnegie library ever built. In 1920 the population was too small to support the library, due to water and other damage from a major fire, the library moved out of the building and into borrowed space in the public school. The Carnegie building remained empty until 1934 when it was sold to the Freemasons.
