This statue is a homage to father Juan de Frias Herran, who founded the university of Sucre in 1624.

The statue is located in a nice little park in the center of Sucre, the Plazuela San Francisco. The monument was ordered by the university, which wanted to pay its respect to the founder.

In this representation, the notable man is shown in a contemplative attitude, looking straight at the university across the street. It's conveniently represented as an elegant man, the white stone perhaps associated with purity.
