This castle was during many years the only defense of the Palms of Great Canary, until the other fortifications throughout XVI century were being constructed. This one was key piece during the conquest of the Canary Islands. Originally this fortification was on a reef, being isolated in the high water. Nevertheless, the later development of the city has left it in mainland, and surrounded by buildings.
