In het centrum van Benschop staat een standbeeld van een beer. De beer is gemaakt van brons en staat op een sokkel van bakstenen en kinderkopjes. 'Berenschieters' is de bijnaam voor de inwoners van Benschop. Het verhaal gaat als volgt: Aan het Boveneind had men in het donker een beer in het land gezien. Er werd groot alarm geslagen. Vele mannen - gewapend met rieken, stokken en een enkeling met een geweer - trokken vanuit het dorp naar het Boveneind. Ja, daar stond de beer. Uit alle macht schreeuwend en dreigend met de wapenen trok het Benschopse leger dapperen op naar het verschrikkelijke monster. Maar de ontgoocheling was groot, dichterbij gekomen bleek de beer een vogelverschrikker te zijn. Sinds die tijd dragen de Benschoppers de erenaam 'Berenschieters' (standbeelden.vanderkrogt.net).
