Walking through gardens of Bojnice Castle you would not notice this strange looking tree unless a little sign will inform you that this tree was planted in 1301 by Matus Cak Trenciansky when the last king Ondrej III died.
The name “Linden Tree of King Matej” was given to it during the time period of 1458 – 1490 when King Matej Korvín used to spend a lot of his time in Bojnice Castle. His official documents used to be signed with words "Sub nostris dilectis tillis bojniciensibus" (written under our lime trees in Bojnice).
Linden tree in its best age used to be almost 30 metres high, with girth of trunk about 12 metres. In 1969 became Protected Natural Monument. It's in property and under protection of Slovak National Museum institution.
