The building was opened in 1893 as St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. It had replaced a little church building dating back to 1866. In the 1890s, all of Nanaimo could still be seen from this location.
In 1925, this congregation like many other congregations joined the newly formed United Church of Canada.

St. Andrew's United Church is a large, Late Victorian style building located at a prominent intersection of the main thoroughfare in one of Nanaimo's oldest neighbourhoods. The historic place comprises the church, hall, manse and grounds.
