The closure dam is a fundamental part of the larger Zuiderzee Works, damming off the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea and turning it into the fresh water lake of the IJsselmeer.
The dam has two mayor functions: to keep the sea out and to create a freshwater lake. It's secondary function is the motorway A7 between the province North Holland and Friesland in the Netherlands.
The given coordinates are of the monument commemorating the closure of the dam on may 28th 1932. There is a little restaurant, shop and lookout tower you can visit. Parking is free.
