"It is to the Bishop of Tournai, Gautier de Marvis, that we owe the first construction of a hall on the Grand Place." In 1227, the municipality was sentenced to pay a fine for violating the law. As she was unable to pay, she had to give up several buildings and have a house called "al trellis" set up on the square.

Little is known of its history until 1606; at most we can say that it was wood. On that date, a storm overthrew her. It was built four years later in composite style: a few broken arches on the ground floor still recall the Gothic style. The arch of the central door is in basket handle. A small cantilevered platform, called breteche, overcomes it.

The current Cloth Hall is a remarkable Renaissance building built in 1610 by Master Mason Quentin Ratte. He worked according to the plans of the painter Jacques Van den Steen.

The whole building collapsed in 1881 but was rebuilt faithfully. Next door and a close type stands the Conciergerie (1612).

Probably inspired by the Renaissance facade of Ghent City Hall, the Cloth Hall has a large interior courtyard, now covered, which hosts many receptions, events and exhibitions. "
