The Mariners' Church of Detroit was built in 1849 with funds willed by two sisters wishing to create a church to serve the growing community of Great Lakes sailers in the area. The church remained at its original location on Woodward Ave. for over 100 years. In 1955, construction of the Detroit Civic Center Plaza forced the 3,000-ton structure to be moved 880 feet to its current site on Jefferson Ave.
On November 10, 1975, the church received national attention when the Reverend Richard Ingalls responded to the tragic sinking of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald by ringing the church's bell 29 times-once for each soul lost. The annual bell ringing tradition to honor the men lost aboard the Fitzgerald still continues today.
