"Iniciada a sua construção no início da década de 70 do século XIX, mediante projeto do Eng.º Jacinto Inácio de Brito Rebelo datado de 1869, veio a ser reformulado no final de 1890, pelo Prof. João da Maia Romão, sendo inaugurado a 25 de Outubro de 1897.
Acolheu, até meados do século XX, diversas repartições públicas para além de Paços do Concelho: Cartório Notarial, Conservatória do Registo Civil e Predial, Fazenda Pública (Finanças) e Tribunal Judicial.
Sofreu profundas obras de requalificação entre 1986 e 1993, sob um projeto da autoria do Arqt.º Eduardo Costa Ferreira.
Ostenta na sua fachada uma pedra de armas, datada de 1897, com as Armas Reais de Portugal do reinado de D. Carlos (1889-1908)."

It is the seat of a municipality with 158.83 km² in area and 25 252 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 6 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Estarreja and Oliveira de Azeméis, to the east by Sever do Vouga, to the southeast by Águeda, to the southwest by Aveiro and to the northwest, through a channel of the Ria de Aveiro, through Murtosa."
