ESMA is the acronym for Escuela Superior de Mecánica de la Armada, or Higher School of Mechanics of the Navy. It was one of the many illegal detention centers organized by the Military in Argentina during the so called "Dirty War", fought between the government and the subversive groups like the Montoneros.

But the ESMA was not just one more of this places. It was the most important. Actually, the place kept being used as a legitimate military school, and only a fraction of the complex was used as a prison, namely the Casino de Oficiales, the officers accommodation building.

After the fall of the old regime the whole complex was opened to the public and became a cultural center with several modules. The Casino de Oficiales was transformed in a museum.
