"Localiza-se no coração da Vila. Foi um importante ponto de defesa medieval, que assegurava, a defesa dos vales do Cávado.

O castelo de Montalegre representa um importante ponto de defesa fronteiriço medieval e assegurava, juntamente com os castelos da Piconha e de Chaves, as defesas dos vales do Cávado e do Tâmega. Em 1273, ano da concessão do primeiro foral a Montalegre por Dom Afonso III, o castelo ainda não existia, mas em 1281, pelo menos uma parte dele já se erguia em Montalegre, segundo uma carta de D. Dinis a D. Isabel. Na carta o rei oferecia doze castelos, entre os quais o de Montalegre. Em 1289-1331, no reinado de D. Afonso IV, o castelo é reedificado. Já no século XIX foi colocado o relógio circular no cubelo maior, passando a ser designado por torre do relógio."

The Montalegre Castle is an important point of medieval frontier defense and secured, along with the castles of Piconha and keys, the defenses of the valleys of Cávado and Tâmega.
