It 1836 in anticipation of the emancipation of the slaves on the islands, a 15' high perimeter was was constructed around the prison. The prison was reconstructed after both a hurricane and earthquake struck Road Town in 1867. The building operated as the main prison for the British Virgin Islands until May 20, 1997 when the prisoners were moved to a new facility and the structure fell into disrepair.
