From the Bali Tourism site:

Gunung Kawi ('Mountain of Poets') is located north of Ubud in the village of Tampaksiring near Bangli in the middle of Bali by the Pakrisan River. About 300 meters north of the bemo terminal in Tampaksiring, on the main road, is the entrance to the path that leads to the Gunung Kawi. The temple dates from the 11th century and is believed to be the burial place of King Anak Wungsu and his many wives. The Gunung Kawi is located in a valley.
It is a complex of ten candis (stupas) carved into the rocks, dating from the 11th century. It was thought that they were burial monuments, but that is probably not true. They are thought to have been made in honor of the Royal Family of the Udayana Dynasty. There is also a ruin of a Buddhist monastery, also carved into the rocks.

After descending 371 steps, you are down in the steep Pakrisan river valley, where the view is beautiful. If you want to continue to the area where the temples are, you are required to take off your shoes. Gunung Kawi has beautiful sawas and the Pakrisan River runs through the center of the complex, which divides the complex into two parts.
The smaller complex on the southern side of the river was probably used for the king's wives, while the larger complex was perhaps used for the king himself, and possibly for some of his concubines. Tombs are approximately one kilometer downstream.
