A pair of stone statues are located on the pillars of the entrance gate to St. John's Cathedral in Antigua. They have an interesting history. They were taken by HMS Temple in 1756, from a French ship destined for Martinique.
The statue on the left is that of St. John the Baptist. The 6' high stone statue depicts John the Baptist wearing robes that expose the left side of his chest. He is standing while holding a long rod in his left hand. His right hand is outstretched and he is holding an object in his cupped right hand.
On the plinth is the inscription: ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST
John the Baptist was born in the late 1st century BC. He was an itinerant Jewish preacher who is considered to be a prophet is both Christianity and Islam. His ministry was to announce the coming of Jesus.
According to the Gospel of Mark, Jesus came to see John. John then baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Herod's daughter Herodias demanded of her father the the head of John the Baptist. Herod then reluctantly orders John the Baptist beheading and his head is delivered to her.
