On March 1, 2002, the United Nations began issuing a series of definitive postage stamps for use out of their offices in Vienna. These showed various tourist attractions throughout Austria. On that same day, this postal card was also issued showing two attractions in Graz: the Clock Tower on the indicia and the Opera House on the left side.
The Clock Tower is located on the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) where a castle once stood. This fortification was largely dismantled in the nineteenth century, but the clock tower and bell tower still remain. What’s left of the castle is now a city park. The clock itself is unusual in that the larger hand indicates the hour and the smaller one indicates the minute.
The Opera House dates from the end of the nineteenth century and is the second largest in Austria. Coincidentally, Graz is the second largest city in Austria. In 1999, a few years before this postal card was issued, the historic district of Graz was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. And, in 2003, the year after the card was issued, Graz was designated the “Cultural Capital of Europe” by the European Union.
