The relief feature the head, upper torso and arms of Aesculapius who hold a staff in his right hand around which is wrapped a serpent, his head is shown in profile and he looking to his left where in his left hand on a plate or tray he holds the head of the serpent. At the base of sculpture is carved the following:
‘FACULTY of MEDICINE’

Superimposed on to Aesculapius is the crest of the University of Birmingham whose ‘Official Blazon Is shown below:

‘Per chevron, the chief per pale gules and azure, in dexter a lion rampant with two heads, in sinister a mermaid holding in the dexter hand a mirror and in the sinister a comb Or, the base sable charged with an open book proper, with two buckles and straps and edges of the third, inscribed "Per ardua ad alta". Aesculapius was the son of Apollo and the mortal princess Cornonis he was the good of healing, truth and prophecy. He was said to have been taught healing by the Centaur Chiron.

'At length Zeus (the King of the Gods), afraid that Asclepius might render all men immortal, slew him with a thunderbolt, Apollo slew the Cyclopes who had made the thunderbolt and was forced by Zeus to serve Admetus.' (visit link)

In the Iliad, Homer mentions Aesculapius as a skilful physician and the father of Machaon and Podalirius who were Greek doctors at Troy and it was only that the cult which began in Thessaly following Aesculapius’ effective cures of the sick in dreams and as the cult grew sleeping in the temples in Epidaurus was regard as way in which the sick could be cure and by 293BC his cult had spread to Rome and Asclepius was worshipped as Aesculapius.

Aesculapius is often represented standing, dressed in a long cloak, with a bare chest and carrying his staff around which a serpent is coiled.
