"The Cul-de-Sac du Marin is one of the first areas of the island of Martinique to be occupied by the French.In January 1660, a secular priest officiates without a church.The parish, which included the neighborhood of Sainte-Anne, erected in 1669 and dedicated to St. Stephen, is bounded on the north by the Pilote River and south by the Pointe des Salines.
Enlightened by the British in 1673, during the war of the League of Augsburg, the parish quickly rises and completes its reconstruction around 1700. In 1684, it is entrusted to the Capuchins and a chapel is built on the site of the future outbuildings of the presbytery.
The Capuchin priest Jean-Marie de Coutances undertook the construction of the Saint-Etienne church in 1766 to replace the chapel and Count Ennery laid the first stone. The father of Coutances assumes the erection of the church with its own funds, the parishioners being too poor to finance the work. He also realizes the restoration of the presbytery. The two side chapels are added in 1853 and 1854.
The main facade, Jesuit style, is entirely in stone and is decorated with two Tuscan orders superimposed, the last crowned by a triangular pediment. The wings are confined by pilasters with bosses. The entrance gate is surmounted by a pierced wooden tympanum and painted. Above the front door, housed in a niche, Saint Stephen watches.
The religious building is distinguished by the location of its bell tower and its octagonal belfry made of Indian wood from Morne-Gommier. The bell tower has the distinction of being separated from the body of the building. "

"Le Cul-de-Sac du Marin est l’un des premiers quartiers de l’île de la Martinique à être occupé par les Français. En janvier 1660, un prêtre séculier y officie sans église. La paroisse, qui englobait le quartier de Sainte-Anne, est érigée en 1669 et dédiée à saint Étienne. Elle est bornée au Nord par la Rivière-Pilote et au Sud par la Pointe des Salines.
Incendiée par les Anglais en 1673, pendant la guerre de la Ligue d'Augsbourg, la paroisse se relève rapidement et achève sa reconstruction vers 1700. En 1684, elle est confiée aux capucins et une chapelle est construite à l'emplacement des futures dépendances du presbytère.
Le prêtre capucin Jean-Marie de Coutances entreprend la construction de l’église Saint-Étienne en 1766 en remplacement de la chapelle et le comte d’Ennery en pose la première pierre. Le père de Coutances assume l’érection de l’église avec ses propres fonds, les paroissiens étant trop pauvres pour financer les travaux. Il réalise également la réfection du presbytère. Les deux chapelles latérales sont ajoutées en 1853 et 1854.
La façade principale, de style jésuite, est entièrement en pierre de taille et est ornée de deux ordres toscans superposés, le dernier couronné par un fronton triangulaire. Les ailes sont cantonnées par des pilastres à bossages. Le portail d'entrée est surmonté d'un tympan en bois ajouré et peint. Au-dessus de la porte d’entrée, logé dans une niche, saint Étienne veille.
L’édifice religieux se singularise par l’emplacement de son clocher et de son beffroi octogonal en bois d’Inde provenant du Morne-Gommier. Le clocher présente la particularité d'être séparé du corps du bâtiment."
