The small town of Dunkeld lies on the north side of the River Tay in Perthshire with the neighbouring Little Dunkeld and Birnam lying on the opposite bank. These are connected by Thomas Telford's bridge which was built in 1809, then the longest bridge over the river. A Toll House was built at the same time and was situated on the south (Little Dunkeld) side of the bridge on the eastern side of the road. Tolls to cross the bridge were taken from here but in the end proved unpopular with riots taking place in 1868 and the tolls being abolished in 1879.

The bridge remains an important crossing point of the river and carries the A923 road from Dunkeld to the nearby A9 Perth to Inverness road. The Toll House is now a private dwelling and remains as it was built, a single storey ashlar construction with projecting bays and Tudor-style windows with diamond panes. A Birnam Heritage Walk plaque is situated on the bridge wall next to the house and reads as follows:

'Toll House

1809. Toll keeper collected postage from travellers crossing the Bridge. Scene of toll riots in 1868.'
