The Santa Marija Convoy Memorial Anchor commemorates the 70th anniversary of Operation Pedestal, the British mission to bring much need supplies to besieged Malta during World War II. The convoy sailed from Britain on 3 August 1942 and passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, which was patrolled by German U-Boats, to reach Malta. The arrival of the convoy of three ships with its supply of food and fuel on August 15, 1942 saved Malta from surrender to axis forces.
The anchor is situated on a square stone platform within a traffic circle. A tablet has an image of Santa Marija and a verse from the gospel of Luke.
